Reading the board

How the Delhi High Court cause list works.

Every Delhi HC advocate knows the ritual: check the eCourts portal the night before, recheck at 7 AM, and walk to the Annex lobby at 9 AM to confirm the room. Here is what you are looking at.

What is the DHC cause list?

The cause list is a court-generated schedule of cases fixed for hearing that day. At Delhi High Court, a separate board is published for each of the 40-odd courts sitting in the Sher Shah Road complex. Each court has a number (Court 1 through 43 and higher on peak days) and its entries show item number, case type, case number, party names, and any remarks like 'For Admission' or 'For Final Hearing'.

How the DHC board is organised

Each court's list is split into sections: the main list (ordinary items in serial order), the supplementary list (added later for urgent matters and restorations), and sometimes a separate IA list for interlocutory applications. The supplementary list can appear overnight or on the morning of the hearing, which is why a single evening check is often not enough.

Finding your case by advocate name

The DHC eCourts portal lets you search by advocate name across all courts for a given date. The result shows each item where your name appears as petitioner's counsel or respondent's counsel, along with court number and item number. You can then cross-check on the physical board at the Annex building or on the screen in the court lobby.

Why the board keeps changing

Courts get adjourned, benches are reconstituted, and presiding judges change. The DHC often updates the cause list on the morning of the hearing. A case listed at item 50 the night before may move to item 12 on the supplementary list if it is marked urgent. NyayX syncs up to four times daily and flags any changes to your listed matters.

Difference from the Today's Board feature

The DHC website shows everyone's cases. NyayX's Today's Board feature shows only your cases. After you add your matters to NyayX, the app matches them against the full DHC cause list and builds a personalised board for your hearings on any date. The full public cause list is still accessible in the app's Cause Lists tab if you want to browse all courts.
